To the surprise of many people who only expected artifacts made of metal to survive, various articles of clothing have been found at the wreck site of the Monitor. A single brown boot that probably belonged to an officer was recovered. It may have been taken off by one of the crew before they jumped off the Monitor to try to get to the lifeboats from the USS Rhode Island. This would have helped them swim better while in the water. In addition, a button was found in the turret. While it is not known exactly what the button was from, it could possibly be from a shirt or maybe even from underwear.
