The cannon carriages were specifically designed by John Ericsson to be installed on the USS Monitor. The carriages were made of a wood and iron composite. Each carriage had a hand-wheel which allowed the gun crew to apply more or less friction to control the gun’s recoil.

When the Monitor was found and the turret was excavated, conservators found the cannon carriages inverted. They were removed from the turret and are currently upside down in their conservation tanks.
