Conservation

 More:

Since everything aboard the Monitor was under more than 200 feet of water for over 100 years, any artifacts that are recovered must go through a detailed conservation process. Sea water, living organisms, time, and currents all help to deteriorate artifacts through various physical and chemical processes. Depending on their composition, each artifact is carefully conserved in order to stop any further deterioration and bring it back to as close to its original form as possible.
