Importing Citations
- Make sure that you have EndNote 8 loaded on your workstation. Remove all previous copies of EndNote.
- Perform your search in CSA Illumina as you normally would. Mark the records that you are interested in keeping by either putting a check in the box next to the number or by clicking on the "Mark all on page" link at the top left of the citations.
- Click on the "Save, Print, Email" link.
- On the "Save, Print, Email" screen, click on the "Save" button. Save the search results to your workstation by giving it a name. You must save the results in a .txt (TEXT) format.
- Open EndNote. Click "File", "New" to begin a new database file (give it a name) or click "File", "Open" to open a database file that you already have created. I would recommend creating a new database when importing so you do not over write any previous citations and so you can make modifications to the bibliographic information, if needed.
- Once the file is open, click on "File", "Import" and an Import Screen will appear. Under "Import Data File", either type in the filename where you saved your search results or click on the "Choose File" button to browse for the filename.
- Under "Import Option", click the arrow and locate the filter that you would like to use: ASFA (CSA). Click the "Import" button. The citations should appear in the Endnote file that you created. If the filter you need is not listed, click on "Other Filters" and a list will appear that you can choose the filter you need.***
- The citations are imported in a "Generic" Reference
Type format. To correct the format to a journal article (or monograph,
proceedings, etc.) click on an individual citation to open the
record. Under "Reference
Type", click on the down arrow and locate the format
that you need: Journal article, Book, thesis, etc. The journal
information (name, date, volume, issue, and pages) are imported
into the "Notes" field.
This information will need to be cut and pasted into the appropriate
fields in the record. Add any additional information that you want
into the record then close it. (Ignore the Service Error: Generic
message.)
*** If you are unable to import the citations, Click on "Edit", "Import Filters", "Open Filter Manager". The EndNote Import Filters screen will appear. Check the box next to the filters that you want to use to import the search results: ASFA (CSA). Go ahead and check the boxes for all filters that you think you may need in the future, such as, Oceanic Abstracts (CSA), Toxline (CSA), ProCite RIS, Uncover, ISI Web of Science, etc. Once the filters are checked, close out the screen and click on "File", "Import" and an Import Screen will appear. Under "Import Data File", either type in the filename where you saved your search results or click on the "Choose File" button to browse for the filename.Under "Import Option", click the arrow and locate the filter that you would like to use: ASFA (CSA). Click the "Import" button.
If the citations that you are importing from Cambridge into Endnote are being imported as a Generic format, please try the following steps:
- Update your version of Endnote [Open Endnote, under "Help", click on "Endnote Program Updates"]
- Change your default format to "Journal Article" [under "Edit", click on "Preferences", click on "Reference Types"]
- Import your citations using the "Toxline (CSA)" filter [it will place the citations in a more user-friendly format; using the ASFA (CSA) or Oceanic (CSA) filter will place the Journal information into a "Note" field]
- If you are getting information in fields that you do not need you can Modify the Reference Type [under "Edit", click on "Preferences", click on "Reference Types", click on the "Modify Reference Types" button, place a period (.) before any field that you do not want to import information into]
- If your printed bibliographies are not in the format that you would like [under "Edit", click on "Output Styles", either click on "Open Style Manager" and select a publication style format from the list or click on "New Style" and create your own publication format.
